Marv, Thanks for your input. FYI, I aced the cesa part of my OWC. I'm well aware that it's considered a "basic skill." It might be more appropriate to call it an "option of last resort" or "if you have to use this skill, you made an egregious error in your choice of a buddy." Unfortunately the greater importance of such basic skills as dive planning ("Dude, buy a computer"), gas management ("Try to have 500 psi in your tank when ya hit the surface"), air sharing, etc. were not stressed. In fact, when a friend and I were making plans to practice skills the weekend following my certification, an instructor overheard us and said "Don't waste a dive practicing skills. That's stuff you'll pick up along the way." Go team. How do you rationalize freediving skills as a prerequiste for dives which necessarily incur a decompression obligation? (Isn't every dive utilizing tanks and a back gas a decompression dive?)
