Hi Scoff, At , you wrote: >So finally helmets, what is the deal? > > > >Simon, please think about it for yourself, and consider the caves you are diving in. Dont compromise your safety for anyone. If the caves are big, clear and you are unlikely to be anywhere near the roof, keep it simple and keep gear to a minimum. If on the other hand you find yourself in an eighteen inch high passage with sharp flakes in the roof .. > Thanks for the detailed reply (and also thanks to everyone else who got back to me). Very much appreciated. I'm in no position to argue about what is the best approach for cave diving in Britain or any where else is so I won't. Since I don't plan on squeezing through narrow gaps in rock in near zero vis probably doesn't mater anyway. Good to hear a range of opinions though and the rationale behind them. From my point of view I want to be as familiar with my gear as possible and use the same basic configuration for all the diving I do. I dive a DIR single tank rig (or as near as I can approximate from what I know sofar, after reading a couple of JJ's books, accessing a range of resources on the web and getting feedback from many divers aroung the world) for all the types of OW diving I do. For the cavern course I'll be in, well, big open caverns or sinkholes no narrower than two divers can easily pass side by side. If my kit is suitable for this (which from everything I've read it is) and the rest of the diving I do then this is what I'll use. If I don't need a helmet, I won't use one.
