Hi Simon,
You don't need to wear a helmet for any of the CDAA courses.
Many (all) of the instructors like helmets and helmet
mounted lights......"hands free".
Alot of the cave diving down Mount Gambier is tight, so that
is why they like hand free.
If I dive the 'shaft' or 'baker's cave', I get lowered in
with a helmet on and then clip it off to a shot line. Put
the tanks on in the water. Do the dive. Take off the tanks.
Then put on the helmet and get pulled out.
As you know, at the shaft and bakers, you need to put your
gear on in the water.
I dive DIR, and don't wear a helmet or a head light.
If your buddy does not illuminate for you while you are
doing tie offs, then I put the light cord behind my neck and
the light dangles, giving me illumination, and both hands
free.
Usually, I hold the light and reel with the left hand, and
do wraps with the right hand.
Hope this helps.
Speak to me off the list if U like.
BTW, I will be down the Mount from feb 23rd to march 3rd.
When will you be down there?
Regards,
Jeff the Darwinian.
