Susan,

I have a set of regular 80 doubles and a regular 80 I use for a stage.

On the stage, the bouyancy is about perfect. By the time I breathe it down
to the point where the tank is positive enough overcome the weight of the
regulator, the tank is pretty much empty anyway. I think additional weight
would be a liability, but if for some reason I wanted it, strapping a weight
on the tank would be my choice rather than a different tank. Lead is a more
efficient ballasting material than aluminum.

I only use the double 80s with a wetsuit, so the weightbelt must have enough
weight on it so that I can get back to the surface in the event of a
catastrophe like both first stages failing shut. Since I'm weighted to
account for all of the fixed weights I carry, the belt must carry enough to
compensate for the variables, namely the gas in the tanks and wetsuit
compression. Making the tanks more negative means less weight on the belt
and less wetsuit compression I can compensate for, so I can't safely go as
deep. With the regular 80s, I can go deeper than my candyass is willing to
deal with the temperature anyway, so perhaps there could be some uses there,
although there would be more weight on the boat, which with my knees and
back, is a showstopper. If I wanted to take some weight off the belt (like
for a long, shallow dive), I'd just use a little v-weight with the regular
80s.

The only use I would have for a neutral 80 would be as a single tank on very
shallow dives or as a hang tank and I'd use steel for those applications
anyway.

With the drysuit, I tried aluminum a couple of times. Steel is all I use
anymore.

Don
