I think that one reason that US instructors charge a lot more is that it costs a lot more to teach in the US. We have mandatory liability insurance, high dues, and high overhead. Yes, there is some green involved - this is the hottest thing, so it's a way to make a buck. If a weekend course is done from a boat, you can figure that $150.00 per student is going to the boat captain. From a $450.00 course that still leaves $300.00 - still a VERY high profit. I would think that a $100.00 profit would be more than enough. But..... From a business standpoint, figure 12 hours of work. Assume 6 students at $100.00 each equals $600.00. This still comes out to $50.00 per hour - damn good pay. If there were only 3 students, that's $25.00 per hour. After taxes and expenses you'd be lucky to clear $10.00 per hour. Shops are in business to make money - clubs are not. A lot of US clubs are independent from shops - these also teach, run trips, etc. The trick is finding them. A good example is the YMCA. Rick
