Thanks, Paul.  This cleared it up.  The URL is interesting because it refers
to a figure 8 know while the picture clearly mentions a figure 8 loop knot.
The figure 8 is the knot I was thinking about.  It has no loop and is
generally used to make a section or end larger, so that it will not pass
through something.  The version with the loop is different and your
reference is the first time I've seen it or at least teh first time I've
seen it under this name.  I think it's a common terminal knot using in
fishing, but It'll take me some time to figure out if, for fishing purposes,
if it has the same name.

It's pretty obvious that the knot would be very secure.  A bowline is a very
secure loop so long as it's under tension but quite easy to untie when it's
not.  This one looks like it would be secure under any conditions but not
quite as easy to untie.
