only difference I know of is that in air mode the bar graph on the left
side of the screen displays your no deco time;
in nitrox mode it displays your CNS uptake.
If it's more conservative in air mode I don't know, I never used it like
that.
even the manuel states that nitrox divers should leave it in nitrox mode.
(what's the point of switching?)
Doesn't matter if the manuel sucks, the computer is so easy to use I
didn't need it.

I do compared the vyper to an uwatec aladin, and found that it's less
conservative up to 30m. but more conservative beyond this
depth.

I like this computer, it has everything you need.
you can easely build a pc interface yourself
the only thing I miss are multiple gasses :-)

The bit of the UI that bugs me is the one that after using it in gauge
mode you have to wait 48 Hours before being able to switch it back to
Nitrox ( don't use the air mode at all ).

I know all of the purists up here would use tables all of the time - but
it is just a pain in the ass when doing multiple muppet dives with
changing nitrox mixes etc

Even pulling the battery did not help on this one - OK I can guess the
legal beagle reasons for this behavior and could stand 24 hours but 48
hours is a hell lot of off gassing!

Other than that it works well - I did not recon that the manual was too
bad - you want to see some of the poorly translated stuff that I get to
work with.

Where did you find the schematics for an interface David ?

take a look at
http://www.dcordes.freeuk.com/suunto.htm

the hard thing is to make a fysical connection to the connection pins
at the back of the vyper;
I use 2 small metal plates bend over in a L shape. screwed to a holding
device like shown on the website.

you can download the original software for uploading the profiles at the
suunto internet site for free.
