Michael,
You probably hit it right on the head with the low calcium. I live near Lake
George NY, and there has been no mussels. Larva have been found, but no
adults. Lake Champlain on the other hand, which is separated from Lake
George by about a mile of swamp land, is loaded with the mussels. The only
difference is the concentration of calcium, and that is only in the range of
a few 10's ppm.
