Subject: Choosing a new light (HID 10 vs 18, etc)
Hi all,

My old canister light is getting a bit past it (cost me $80AUS (around
$40US) so can't complain) and not being very user servicable I'm looking at
a replacement. At this stage I'd be looking toward a 50 watt halogen (or
equivalent HID) with a canister that's 2-3 pound negative. A burn time of
50min to an hour would be adequate but I've hear it's best not to cycle the
newer batteries to their limit each time their used, true? Besides having
extra burn time seems a sensible precaution even for open water dives
(which is what the light would be used for, night diving mainly).

While I don't really want to spend a lot of money at present (looking at a
drysuit in the not too distant future and the bank account is not looking
too healthy) I want a good quality, durable, servicable light that can take
the rigors of shore entries. I'm thinking about one of the EE lights
either the Pro4 with 10 watt HID or Pro6 with 50 watt Halogen (later would
be roughly equivalent to my present light in output and burn time) or
possibly a Triton TLS712. I had a few questions though that list members
may be able to answer...

1) Why would someone buy an 18 watt HID over a 10 watt? The EE site is not
clear, while the 18 produces over 1000 lumens vs 500 for the 10 watt they
are both claimed to "appear" as bright as a 50 watt Halogen.

2) Are there any advantages of a Halogen over HID (in terms of
servicability, reliability under certain conditions)? Obviously
replacement bulbs would be cheaper.

3) Finally has anyone looked at the Triton range of canister lights
produced in Australia? They appear very similar in design to the EE lights
except they don't offer a HID light as far as I know and they don't have
Goodman handles, intead there is some sort of strap (which I'd replace with
bugie if I got one, the canister is acrylic too rather than Delrin (which I
think EE use)). Only reason I thought it worth mentioning is that as a DM
I could probably get one of there Australian made lights for around a third
the price of an EE light (which I'd have to pay full retail/duty/etc on)
and parts would obviously be easier to get. Here is there web site...

Any comments appreciated.
