Jeff, I was tempted to join the thread. We were up in Queensland on a job last month and I bust open a filled tooth on a piece of oyster shell (no more fried oysters for me) at dinner the night before the shoot. I found a dentist who cleaned it out and packed it for me just before we were due to hop on the boats. - I asked him to pack it instead of filling it 'cause he had to rush and I wanted it open so there'd be no pressure problems. But when I was spittng out the chunks, the amalgam filling came out as crumbly black grit - no metalic qualities at all. I said "Man that's oxidised" and he said "Yes" but I couldn't ask him why 'cause he put his hand back in my mouth. It was a silver mercury amalgam filling but it was like dry black sand inside. Why is that? I thought those things were sort of inert and bonded so that the toxic metals couldn't leach out. So how can oxygen get in? Could a few hundred hours at elevated pp02s cause big fillings to oxidise faster inside? Or are all old silver amalgam fillings like that inside. rgds billyw >>----- Original Message ----- >>From: <mailto:joe@po*.co*>Joe >>To: <mailto:f.ouwerkerk@qu*.nl*>Ferry Ouwerkerk ; <mailto:Techdiver@Aquanaut.Com>Techdiver@Aquanaut.Com >>Sent: Wednesday, August 15, 2001 6:12 AM >>Subject: Re: On/offgassing of tooth fillings >> >>You need a new dentist. >> >>Joe >>>----- Original Message ----- >>>From: <mailto:f.ouwerkerk@qu*.nl*>Ferry Ouwerkerk >>>To: <mailto:Techdiver@Aquanaut.Com>Techdiver@Aquanaut.Com >>>Sent: Monday, August 13, 2001 2:56 PM >>>Subject: On/offgassing of tooth fillings >>> >>>About 7 years ago, one of my fillings popped out after what was then a normal ascent (18 metre/minute).
