Ren, the deal is simple. This whole thread has been ridiculous, and I =
didn't think it was really worth the effort to battle such obvious =
silliness, but I stand corrected. If it's counter-arguments you want, =
hey, I've got them.

and listen or advise (if you you have any usefull information to give)

It appears to me you have no usefull information, nor are willing to =
discuss, any points of mine you may disagree with"

If by open minded you mean "gullible to dive-industry bullshit", then no =
I am not open minded. As for useful information, here's my nickel's =
worth:

A long while back, I dove quite a bit with a guy who had Mares Volo =
fins. I also had occasion to dive with some folks who swore by the =
twin jet thingies, so I have had some exposure to this crap. Hell, I =
didn't get turned on to original jets until less than a year ago. My =
take: The gimmick fins are all too floppy to be useful. As you said, =
they are completely useless for frog kicking, but they are also useless =
for sculling, shuffling, modified flutter, turning around while =
remaining horizontal by moving only your ankles, and just about any =
other propulsion or maneuvering technique other than an open water =
flutter kick. If the fin isn't moved through a relatively full range of =
motion, there is hardly any propulsion at all because the things are too =
soft to be responsive. =20
They are easy to over kick. If I want to go somewhere in a hurry, I =
need to be able to put some ass behind a pair of fins and get there now. =
Jets are stiff enough to do that, the other crap is not. If you've =
ever taken a good look at someone who tries to accellerate in any of =
these designs, it's pretty damn funny. There's a bit of a "roadrunner" =
effect where the legs kick furiously with little or no motion until the =
fin catches up. They're too soft to actually move a lot of water, and =
are easily over kicked until one builds up the forward momentum =
necessary to allow the fin to act against the now moving water column, =
you know--stream tube dynamics--as dynamic pressure increases, static =
pressure decreases. Static pressure is the enemy of the floppy fins, =
and is exactly what is required for accelleration, and for most =
propulsion techniques period, apart from the aforementioned flutter =
kick.
And now the coup de grace: They aren't that damn hot at the flutter =
kick, either. They are an accommodation to the weak. Anybody that can =
put some ass behind a set of proper fins and have the aerobic =
conditioning to not turn into a hoover, will smoke anyone in a set of =
gimmick fins. Maybe everyone who's tempted to try split fins should =
first try putting on a pair of running shoes, and maybe go to the gym =
once in a while.
Oh, and you had to know you were just asking for it with the aqua =
zepp comment. That was the straw that pushed me over the edge on =
deciding to post what I did originally. The idea of a grown man =
straddling a five foot long phallus is just too much for my sense of =
right and wrong to tolerate. ;-))

S/F,
Duane
