Artifact rules in the Great Lakes are simple.
Rule 1: LEAVE IT THERE!
Rule 2: When in doubt, See rule 1.

Penalties are steep too. In Michigan (where I live), some divers were
caught by the authorities while taking an artifact off of a wreck. Not only
were they arrested, but their boat and dive gear was confiscated and
forfeited. On top of that, many divers sent emails and faxes to the local
prosecutors office demanding that the violators be punished to the fullest
extent of the law. This occured in either '99 or 2000.
