Is there a better way to mark off distances on a reel line?

I've been using knots and it seems there must be a better way to figure out
how far off my tie-off I am at any given time.

Some methods I'm thinking about:
1. Threading a small piece of black dacron through the nylon braid several
times, burying a reef knot inside the braid.
2. Paint
3. "Magic Marker"

Any thoughts?
