The thing is - even if he ever does have something useful to say on his own, he will never be able to say that he got there without your help (whether he personally accepted it or not). The fact is that what you have done for diving is so widespread even just at this point that he cannot help but have learned at least some little things from it, from transitivity if nothing else. That is one thing that will never reciprocate in his favor, no matter what experience he eventually may accumulate. He will never be able to say that you were able to do what you did in any way thanks to him.
