While I'm normally a lurker, this discussion happens often enough and affects the list such that even a non-contributor like myself feels compelled to stir the mud occassionally. > > Unfortunately, I think it TAKES a slap in the face for many to listen ... C'mon, far fewer people learn through abuse than learn through reasoned discussion. How many have chosen to reject the entire message because of this? > *Trey's technique* it appears, *has done much to change the way > that people > look at diving*. How much more would he have changed it had he used the same common sense in writing that he excersizes in diving? I contend that those who wish to learn from Trey, do it in spite of his best efforts to alienate anyone who thinks differently. > > Long ago, I believed that kindler and more genital approach from > Trey would > accomplish more.......Then *I* grew up. I don't want a genital (sic) approach from Trey either. :-) Funny that you should mention growing up. Anyone who's read "The games people play" or any management/psychology book would recognize a familiar pattern here. When people's expectations are not met or when confronted with a difference of opinion the relationship that existed (adult to adult) is often replaced by a parent to child relationship (or a child to child, etc). I'll leave it to you to figure our which seems to occur here. ;-) > > *The industry NEEDS Trey's sometimes harsh word.* > Ridiculous. They need his experience and the rigor of peer review. I'm dissapointed, but not surprised, that Aldo's request for this has been rejected by Trey. > I remember a few years ago the ramifications for telling one > *leading* local > Tech. Instructor that I thought it was wrong for agencies to push > the depth > issue and that I personally did not dive air or Enx much past 100'. I wish > then I was armed with some of Trey's emails and history. Did you mean armed with his insults or his reasoning? > > Civility did LITTLE to get the word out about: Oh never mind the > list IS TOO > LONG How do you know? What would have been different had a more adult approach been used? Take for example the tone on the rebreather list. I contend that more information on rebreathers is disseminated there now that Trey has been booted than would otherwise exist. No matter how you rationalize it, there is no excuse for the nihilistic approach that satisfies the ego more than the commonweal. This is not meant to antagonize anyone, but who can deny that the signal-to-noise ratio on this board is weak? When you have to dig through the insults to pry the information out, you're wasting your time compared to what you could have done with a more professional attitude. I applaud your ability to look past the insults, but consider the list as a whole. It would be much better served by professionalism. In fact, it's a testament to the quality of Trey's experiences that we all value it so much that we put up with (and in some cases even defend) behaviour that would get anyone else dropped kicked off the list in a New York minute.
