Mathias,

You are correct. The European legislation, also applicable in British law,
covers the professional working standards and ages. To handle compressed air
and gas systems an individual must be at least 16 years + 1 day old.
However, there is no regulation that covers "users" as in divers. Currently
I believe the youngest age one can be put on a self contained underwater
breathing apparatus is 8, on a programme conducted to no deeper than 1.3 bar
within a confined environment. The next up junior step is 12 for 2.2 bar
maximum dives. This is valid for America and Britain which is part of the
Euro legislation(s).

Please don't take this as if I agree with this form and minimum age of
teaching. Just to clarify the regulations. Of course everything else is
really up to the instructor's discretion and knowledge. I agree with Aldo on
the "development" issue. Regards

Izzy

Aldo,
this may hold only for professional working.
You are right, there are Europeen standards, these have to be transposed
into national legislation, don't they.
I will ask a friend and my girlfriend, they are both in this very
certifikation business.

regards
Matthias
