Hi Jim,

In Mexico there are Cenotes that contain Hydrogen Sulfide. One that comes to
my mind is Cenote Anatila, about 10 kilometers south of the village of Tulum.
This Cenote is 200 feet deep, it has a four foot thick layer of Hydrogen
Sulfide at 100'. When you approach it you think you have hit the bottom of
mud and silt. Then your dive buddy slowly disappears into this false bottom,
a very awesome site to see. As you go through it, all surface light
vanishes, and your in crystal clear water again with your buddy giving you
the OK signal. I think the reason for this instant OK signal is to confirm
that you haven't entered the movie version of "The Twilight Zone"

Here in the US, I have dove caves with this stuff. On the west coast of
Florida there is a sink hole called "Hospital Hole", It's about 150' deep
with the Hydrogen Sulfide layer at about 80'-90'. This layer changes during
different times of the year. Sometimes it's condensed about three feet thick
with crystal clear water below it. At other times it is like a tea color
blend from 90' to the bottom.

On the above dives you can smell and taste the Sulfide ( rotten eggs!)
through your mask. I have always dove this sink in a wet suit. The fresh
water above the Sulfide cleans me off before exiting. Neither I or anyone
who has dove under these conditions have experienced any ill effects. I read
in some tech. report about the dangers of diving in Hydrogen Sulfide, but
it's been a long time ago. If anyone has this information I would like to
see it posted. On the other hand maybe you shouldn't post it, as everything
I have ever liked in this life I've been told will kill me! Son stay out of
those CAVES! Son don't eat those beans, the generate HYDROGEN SULFIDE!

Yours,

Ed
