Strictly speaking, Hopkalite is a catalyst which is often used to enhance
the combustion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and hydrogen to water
vapor. Both are pretty combustible and need very little help to burn.

The only reason this is an issue for us is that the long life of a catalyst
(as opposed to filter media) may result in the Hopkalite being forgotten
about unless periodic air analysis is done.

There are filter masks sold for pilots that purport to filter out carbon
monoxide (among other combustion products). The effective life of these is
generally expressed in seconds, enough time to get the descent started and
some ventilation going. I suspect they don't work very well for CO even
during those few seconds, although staying alive in a CO contaminated
atmosphere is generally a matter of something like a tenth of a percent, so
it doesn't take much to make a big difference.
