Subject: PADI's Rec/Tec

Just received this from a PADI instructor friend. It's PADI's release to
its people about its new rec/tec program. Am thrilled that the same
"performance-based methodologies" found in all PADI programs will be
employed. This will ensure that the new rec/tec divers demonstrate the same
level of proficiency that PADI divers are known for worldwide. The program
also includes a "Discover Tec Experience." Enjoy.
Gary

DSAT TecRec Program
PADI in conjunction with Diving Science and Technology (DSAT) is pleased
to announce the release of the Apprentice Tec/Tec Deep Diver course.
DSAT has formed a Technical Diving Division to address the needs of PADI
members who wish to offer training programs outside the traditional
limits for recreational diving.
The Apprentice Tec/Tec Deep Diver course follows the same
performance-based instructional system methodologies that PADI
Instructors learn to use and apply in the PADI Instructor Development
Course (IDC). Additionally, the course outline includes an introductory
Discover Tec Experience that credits toward the Apprentice Tec/Tec Deep
Diver Course.

The Apprentice Tec/Tec Deep Diver course trains the diver in the motor
skills required for technical diving; instructs the diver in the hazards
and risks involved within the scope of the course, as well as
establishes the limits of training received in the course. In addition,
the course trains the diver to prepare for and respond to reasonably
foreseeable emergencies that may occur in this type of technical diving.

To help you get a head start on training Tec Deep Divers, DSAT will be
conducting a series of regional Tec Deep Instructor Trainer Programs for
Course Directors interested in becoming familiar with the TecRec Program
and the Tec Deep Instructor Trainer rating. (A list of regional programs
and a registration form is included with this letter.) Attending the Tec
Deep Instructor program is one of the prerequisites for becoming a
TecRec Instructor Trainer. The course fee includes the Tec Deep
Instructor materials and Tec Deep Instructor Examination fee.

The Apprentice Tec Diver, a sub-course of the Tec Deep Diver course, is
for divers who do not yet have the prerequisite experience and training
needed to complete the Tec Deep Diver course, but who wish to begin
developing the skills and knowledge involved in technical diving. Its
goals are:

To qualify the diver to make gas-switch, extended no-stop dives to 40
meters / 130 feet using air and enriched air with up to 60 percent
oxygen, using technical diving equipment and procedures.
To provide the foundation skills for completing the entire Tec Deep
Diver course.
The Tec Deep Diver course is for divers with the prerequisite experience
and training needed to begin moving beyond the traditional limits of
recreational scuba diving. The goals are:

To qualify the diver to make gas-switch, extended no-stop dives;
decompression stop dives and accelerated decompression dives using air,
enriched air and oxygen, to 50 metres / 165 feet using technical diving
equipment and the procedures required to manage the risks involved.
To provide the foundation skills for further training in technical
diving.
Instructor Qualifications

* To apply for certification as a DSAT Tec Deep Instructor (which
qualifies you to teach Discover Tec, Tec Apprentice/Deep Tec), you must
meet the following criteria:

Be a renewed PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer or higher.
Be a PADI Enriched Air Diver Instructor.
Be a PADI Deep Diver Specialty Instructor.
Be certified as a DSAT Tec Deep Diver or equivalent. For the purposes of
this qualification, equivalency is defined as certification and training
in technical deep diving using air, enriched air and pure oxygen for
decompression dives to at least 50 metres/165 feet. Questions regarding
equivalencies should be directed to the Training Department at your PADI
office.
Have a minimum of 270 dives logged, with at least 25 stage decompression
dives with a maximum depth deeper than 40 metres/130 feet.
Have certified a total of ten or more PADI Deep Divers and/or PADI
Enriched Air Divers. Any combination that totals ten is acceptable.
Have assisted with at least two DSAT Tec Deep Diver courses or one DSAT
Apprentice Tec Diver course and one DSAT Tec Deep Diver course. If
certified by another training organization as an instructor equivalent
to DSAT Tec Deep Instructor, having taught or assisted two courses
equivalent to the DSAT Tec Deep Diver course may meet this requirement,
as stipulated on the DSAT Tec Deep Instructor Application.
Have successfully completed the Tec Deep Instructor Standards Exam and
Tec Deep Instructor Theory and Practical Application Exam. These exams
will be offered during regularly schedule IEs and by qualified TecRec
Instructor Trainers.
Meet the Peer Review Waterskill requirements listed on the DSAT Tec Deep
Instructor Application through the attesting signature of a DSAT Tec
Deep Instructor, or a PADI Instructor with an equivalent rating.
Your application must include documentation/proof of meeting these
requirements by including photocopies of certifications, qualifications,
etc. Log entry copies or print outs must specify dates, depths,
locations, times and gases used. Verification and signatures provided by
witnesses (divers and instructors of courses assisted) must provide the
same information. See the PADI Tec Deep Instructor Application in the
Appendix of the Instructor Guide for details on documentation
requirements.

We are recommending that instructors interested in becoming DSAT Tec
Deep Instructors take an instructor trainer course with a qualified
Course Director. In addition to hands-on training on how to conduct the
course, instructors will be able to have their Peer Review Waterskills
signed off and complete the Tec Deep Instructor Standards Exam, and Tec
Deep Instructor Theory and Practical Application Exam. Another benefit
of taking the course through a Course Director is instructors can
receive credit for having assisted on an Apprentice Tec Dive course,
which contributes toward meeting the certification requirement 7 above.

Trainer Requirements

For Course Directors who wish to apply for DSAT Tec Deep Instructor
Trainer certification (and be eligible to teach Discover Tec, Apprentice
Tec and Deep Tec), an individual must:

Be a current PADI Course Director.
Be a DSAT Tec Deep Instructor.
Attend a DSAT Tec Deep Instructor Trainer Program.
Tec Deep Diver Course Materials:

Course Materials include the DSAT Instructor Guide supported by lesson
guides and instructional slates. Student materials include the DSAT Tec
Deep Diver Manual. Instructors will also find other materials such as
the PADI Enriched Air Diver course materials, PADI Deep Diver course
materials, The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving and Decompression
Theory, Dive Tables and Dive Computers to be very useful during the
course.

We look forward to seeing you at a Course Director Update or Tec Deep
Instructor Trainer Program sometime in 2001.
