Looks as though the DIR flag is flying in sunny Brisbane.

Subject: [austtech] Brief report on NAUI Tech Workshop
Importance: High

G'day=20

The following is a very brief report on the recently concluded NAUI =
Tech
Australian workshop.=20

Programs covered included:=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 Technical EANx (40m)=20

=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0 =A0 Decompression =
Techniques (50m)=20

=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0 =A0 Extended Range =
(55m)=20

=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0 =A0 Helitrox=20

=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0 =A0 Trimix 1 (71m) & 2 =
(91m)=20

=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0 =A0 Gas Blender (All =
mixes)=20

=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 =A0=A0=A0 =A0 Technical Support =
Leader (Tech DM)=20

Most of the courses had similar theory to every other technical =
agencies
equivalent courses.=20

Notable differences were the use of RGBM tables for the Trimix and =
Helitrox
courses. these tables must be used when these courses are being taught.
Abyss at present does not use full RGBM and until it uses full RGBM it =
can't
be used for course dive planning. Likewise for the Sunnto computer, =
only
uses partial RGBM. A full set of RGBM tables is presently worth =
USD$3000 so
it's no wonder some dive groups buy a specific table for a specific =
dive.
NAUI Tech provides enough tables to cover all the required course =
dives.=20

Briefly RGBM is based on bubble size while most other algorithms work =
on
dissolved gas. I won't go into more detail as there is plenty of =
information
available on the net for those interested. If anyone has some very =
specific
questions I'll be happy to answer them privately.=20

DCAP tables by Hamilton were also looked at for comparison, interesting =
to
see what the WKPP used to use for their extreme dives.=20

Skills wise was also similar to most other agencies. With all skills =
needing
to be performed;=20

=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=20

1. On the bottom=20

2. Neutrally buoyant in mid-water=20

3. While finning horizontally=20

4. While on a horizontal line=20

All skills must first be taught and practiced in a confined water =
situation.
And only on dives shallower than 40m can skills be performed and =
evaluated
for course purposes. On deeper dives the only skill evaluated is the =
dive
itself.=20

Extended Range course is different in that it can only be taught with =
the
permission of NAUI Tech HQ (required each time). Deciding factor is =
that the
divers must be diving in or going to dive in an area where Helium is =
not
available. This means that it could not be taught to divers in Brisbane =
that
were only ever going to dive in Brisbane. Yes, this approval process is =
open
to potential abuse by individual instructors but there will always be =
money
first/safety second technical instructors no matter how tight the
requirements are.=20

This issue is one of the reasons NAUI Tech does not do crossovers, all
potential Instructors must have a clean safety record, meet all other
prerequisites and attend both the theory and practical workshops.=20

Although NAUI Tech has insisted on DIR configuration for the course =
dives
they do also insist that students are exposed to other equipment
configurations during the remainder of the course. After the course the
divers are free to make up their own minds.=20

Only OMS bondage wings are not allowed on NAUI Tech courses due to =
problems
with orally inflating them at depth.=20

Independent twins are also not allowed during any course dives.=20

As per usual for some US based agencies, Metric seems to be an alien =
concept
for some of them (since when do 55lb wings have 121kg of lift). Thanks =
must
go to Noel Teufel, for converting all the student manuals, instructor
manuals and even the CD ROM's prior to the workshop.=20

I am sure that there will be the usual advertorial in Dive Log in due
course, but I don't know how much detail it will go into.=20

If any one wants more specific information about any of the programs =
please
e-mail me privately and I'll do my best to answer your questions or put =
you
in touch with someone that can.=20
