Many years ago now we had a Canadian, on secondment to Australia, become a member of our small, private, intensely independent Dive Club. Just before he returned to Canada he wrote an article about ice diving there. One of their techniques was to use a small snow plow to create concentric rings of snow-free ice around the hole, roughly every 10 metres (33ft) with the ploughed up snow discarded to the side _away from_ the hole. Divers looking up could see the extra light and, especially the darker side with double the snow. Sounds like a good idea to me. Mind, I have absolutely no idea how well this would work in practice.
