Subject: aluminum tanks: why did ... ?

Dear senior technical divers,

I  always  wondered *why* the (american) industry started to make
aluminum  tanks  ... were steel alloys worse than aluminum in the
late 60's - early 70's ?

After  some  30+ years of development of both products, are steel
tanks  the  "winners"  or  are  aluminum  tanks  better  for some
purposes ?

As  far  as  I  know,  in  Europe, aluminum tanks were not widely
used/accepted/distributed.
