Subject: re: U-157

Many times the reported sinking positions for U-boats, as well as other
wartime casualties, were rough (I mean ROUGH) locations. There are some
cases where the reported location was thousands of miles off from the actual
location. In any case, odds are that if the U-157 was sunk in this reported
vicinity, we are talking about deep water.

By the way, the U-166 is perhaps one of the sketchiest undiscovered sunken
U-boats around. It was reported to have been sunk off west Louisiana in
shallow water, not Pensacola. I have read stories of the sunken hulk
"drifting" around the Gulf which is hilarious. It has been "found" by
hundreds in various locations such as off Tampa, Texas, and Lousiana. The
area where it was attacked has been extensively surveyed by MMS with remote
sensing -- nada. I have been told the area, under strong sediment influence
from the Mississippi delta, could have been completely buried. I find that
unlikely; even if it was buried by soft sediments, you could still get a
return on side-scan, depending on the frequency and setup you were using.
Furthermore, the vessel the U-166 sunk prior to its own sinking shows up
easily on side scan and does not show enough sediment burden to account for
the burial of the smaller U-boat. The U-boat could have simply been damaged
in the attack, only to sink at another location some time later. Perhaps
time will tell...

Mike
