After releasing oxygen these HbS fibrils twist into helical rods and distort and elongate the RedBloodCells into a "sickle" shape. These "sickled" RBC can obstruct microcirculation (clog capillaries). symptoms: chronic anemia ; shortness of breath; fever; and episodic crises that are characterized by severe pain in the abdomen, bones, or muscles.
