I tend to put divers into 2 groups. One I call the "80 & bolt" crowd, this
is where you take an aluminum 80, fill it with air, slap it onto your back,
jump in the water and when you run out of air bolt to the surface. Hundreds
of dive operations around the world use this technique as it is idiot proof
and almost impossible to get bent.

Beyond that is technical diving. This is where a diver gets to the point
that you can't simply head to the surface when if you run out of air or have
other problems. When you do this you need to have special equipment,
procedures and experience. It is very expensive.

Nitrox diving is a sort of quasi-tech diving where folks are trying to do
what tech divers do without paying the piper. But what people don't realize
that the decision to use high PP02's is exacting a price. The price is that
you are increasing the likelihood of your getting killed or damaging your
lungs for the sake a few minutes of bottom time.

And what is the point of that? About the only thing I can say good about
nitrox training is that it teaches you the fundamentals of mixing gas. Other
than that you might as well do trimix at the same time and at least do
something to make your dive safer, not less safe.
