I drove down Saturday mainly for the opportunity to dive a Halcyon back plate system and to hear Jarrod Jablonski talk about DIR. But I also must admit that I had a certain kind of voyeuristic interest in meeting Mike Kane (MHK), Terry Lee May, and some of the other DIR/GUE types who's name I don't remember. Sorry. Anyway, as usual with a face to face meeting (as opposed to an internet meeting) everybody was extremely nice and helpful. No George though, maybe next time. While I have been pretty throroughly immersed in the DIR ideas and practices, via tech diver and the web, I have not been able to practice any of it. In other words, nobody, myself included would consider me a DIR diver. I'd like to thank Andrew Voss for putting this together and to Jarrod for flying out to talk to us and to Mike and Terry for driving up from LA. It was really helpful. I'd also like to thank Halcyon for the equipment that they loaned out for free. Granted, it's in their best interest, but free is free and it's not like it's easy to find a place to rent the stuff either. Anyway, Jarrod did a really good job of going over the whole DIR philosophy, explaining the equipment choices, techniques, and ideas behind it. I only wish I could have come down the night before to hear him talk about the Brittanic. So, they fitted me up with a back plate and 27 lb wing, made me a bungie necklace for my backup regulator and I was off. I REALLY like the back plate. My tank felt so much more stable on my back than usual. I also used the weight pockets which are a much nicer system than the integrated weights on my Scubapro Falcon. BTW, I've got a "friend" who's got a Scubapro Falcon for sale. He'll even throw in an AirII. He's, um, not on the internet, so if you go through me I'll put you in contact with him. :) I think I see a series of purchases in my future... BTW, it was a FABULOUS day in Monterey. These DIR seminars are a GREAT idea. I don't think most dive shops or instructors know that Halcyon, DIR, GUE, etc. even exist. Things like this that get the word out will hopefully help keep new divers from doing what I'm going to have to do. Which is spend money to replace equipment that I already have. The stuff I have isn't "bad" for a recreational diver like myself. But the DIR stuff is BETTER and it costs the same and it will last forever. Why buy crap, when you can buy good stuff in the first place? Thanks again guys.
