Christian, Double D-rings were the first quick release system used in diving. It consists of two D-rings secured together in a loop on the end of a strap. The opposite end (loose end) of the strap is feed through both and then a loop of the remaining end is feed through the back D-ring. Although secure, it leaves the end of the strap tab sticking out which can be pulled to quickly release the piece of gear. It definitely is NOT quick release! This was the predominant quick release up until the late 60's when the stainless steel buckle came into vogue. Look in The New Science of Skin and Scuba Diving, Chapter 5, "Basic Skin and Scuba Equipment" for a picture. If you don't have the book go to your library, most still have a copy.
