I'm no authority on the matter, but it seems to me that DIR is a subset of Hogarthian. What I mean is, take the average techdiver's setup that obviously isn't well thought out at all. Stream-line the gear, change the harness to a 3 d-ring, no quick disconects, breathe the long hose... presto. You're Hogarthian. It is named after William Hogarth Main who started diving that "minimalist" system. Now, DIR starts with attitude. Don't dive with anyone unsafe. Always plan your dive. Now you throw out the bungee wings, the posseidons, the dive-computer, etc. You get a proper wing, regs, hose-routing, etc. Basically similar gear to George. Now you're on your way to DIR diving. DIR is Hogarthian. Hogarthian isn't necessarily DIR. ss -----Original Message----- From: Kent R. Frazier [mailto:kfrazier@co*.co*] Sent: September 14, 2000 10:59 PM To: TechDiver Subject: DIR and Hogarthian Is there a difference between DIR and Hogarthian and if so what? I only ask, because on the GUE web site there are many references to Hogarthian, but while doing a search of the archives I found this message: [begin quote] Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 06:39:42 -0500 From: trey@ne*.co* (Trey) Subject: dropping the issue vs. diescussion wasRe: stroke tee shirt /dive girl mag [snip] Just make it clear that there is an alternative, and then let's talk about the logic of why I am wrong and why my stuff does not work ( ? ) and why the other stuff out there is so clever, whether you personally do it or not. Let me also please ask of you that you do not ever confuse me or DIR with "Hogarthian" in any way - that is a direct insult, and is like calling me a stroke or a bonesmuggler or something. I'd rather admit to the latter than to doing anything "Hogarthian". [snip] -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
