Christina: Thanks for your remarks. The public bottomlands I am referring to are the federal waters of the US covered under the Abandoned Shipwreck Act, state waters covered under the ASA and the Submerged Lands Act, and (in the case referred to in the editorial) state and US waters designated as National Marine Sanctuaries. Everyone knows that wrecks will not be preserved forever: I am simply suggesting that we can seek to tread a little more lightly while we use them. Preservation is socialism?! Hunters, fishermen, outdoorsmen, divers, sailors, hikers, etc. the world over call it good stewardship. The principle may be idealistic, but it has stood the test of time for many people in many different outdoor sports and deserves better than to be labelled "naive." DJ Cooper
