Trey, A while back I was planning a solo dive over the wall at Cayman to 160' on air. I dropped to 140', checked my gauges and dropped while I started taking pictures. Because of my impairment at that depth I wasn't closely monitoring my gas, my descent or my deco, but I was having a good time. By the time I looked again, I was below 180' and into a 20' stop on a wrist computer. It was third dive of the day. I ended up with an hour of deco on an 80 and just had enough air, the tank was sucking dry as I surfaced. Several stupid clusterfuck lessons learned. I tried to look up info about TDI for my note to my instroketor buddy, but couldn't get the US website to come up. Are they out of business? I finally did find and opened an Asian site on which it was stated that they limit air dives to 180', which is better news since they clearly had a much deeper limit when I took my "Tech Nitrox" and "Extended Range Diver" & 'mix course over 5 years ago. I think it's clear that stats need to be kept universally on tech diving deaths & accidents, not just one pile of numbers with the IUCRR that they guard jealously and then another pile of numbers somewhere else, also jealously guarded. All the numbers and the raw facts ought to be made public ASAP, so divers everywhere can get a grip on how bad things are. Think of it as part of the "open source" movement. I have to wonder why such stats are not readily available when you can get info on just about everything else, from home address and pictures of every Board member and info on every member, categorized, alphabetized and cross-referenced, oh and don't forget the gift stores with lots of pretty patches, and maps and t-shirts. All important stuff. But nothing that a diver can look up and say, "Damn, I was planning this type of dive and look how this diver died on the same profile!" Why is this info not forthcoming? It's really stunning, divers are dying and they're selling T-shirts. Later, JoeL -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
