Don't laugh Jim.

You're used to diving on a flat bottom in a shallow ocean. Up here we have
deep narrow fjords, some of which are over 2,000 ft deep. Combine that with
18-25 ft tides and you can swirling currents that go in every direction
including down. At peak exchange, the currents in some of the the channels
can be so strong that even the navigation markers pull underwater. There's
one fjord south of Juneau called Ford's Terror where the tidal currents
cause 4' standing waves and there's often small icebergs mixed in. Puget
Sound is less extreme but has similar conditions in certain places.

But then there's no good reason to be blue water diving in this stuff. The
answer is to stick on the walls and stay out of the deep mid-channel areas
where you can't see anything but black water anyway. And that still doesn't
change things. Much better to temporarily increase your buoyancy through
your wings and drysuit rather than permanently increasing it through
ditching weight which will make it impossible to stop when you get shallow.
