Hi Don,

I can't make any claims of even knowing what is the DIR method and what is
not, but I have some real problems with what you have written.

First, I consider two of the functions of a lift bag to be as an emergency
decompression platform and as an emergency surface marker. And as such,
while it's nice to get a little help from your friends, I sure as hell would
never let one of my students out in deep water if I wasn't convinced that he
or she could put up a lift bag without any help.

Second, while breathing out may help a little, I don't feel it will
compensate for very long, for the buoyancy of a lift bag which is being
inflated with a power inflator.

And finally, if I can pull the bag back under water, I need to be real
careful (and I mean REAL CAREFUL) to control my buoyancy at depth while I am
retrieving it. It is really easy to end up much shallower than I wanted to
be by pulling the bag (with its smaller but possibly non-negligable) positive
buoyancy back to me. My students and I always carry two bags and two reels
on deep dives, and this situation is one of the reasons why.

But then this is just one trimix instructor's (and an ANDI and TDI
instructor's at that) opinion.

Take care and dive safe, Scott

<< Summary of DIR Closed Bag Deployment:

1.  Look above to ensure that path for deployment is clear;

2.  Attach safety spool and allow team member to control spool;

3. Inflate bag with wing or dry suite inflator hose with bag in front of

diver; caution is to be used to ensure that the diver does not inflate the

bag underneath himself (Note: reduce buoyancy, by breathing out, to

compensate for lift bag buoyancy);

4. Look above again to ensure that path for deployment is clear and release

bag;

5. Pull on bag to determine if you can pull the bag back under water (Note:

If bag resubmerges, the bag needs more gas and should be redeployed);

6. Check the bag deployment to ensure that it will support the diver below.

List, have we missed anything?

Thanks >>
