Jerred,

Maffatone didn't have any new ideas. His rig was just multiple
cylinders cobbled together with swagelock and delivering a
variety of gasses through a manual gas switching block. The only
thing new about it was that it reached new heights in complexity
and danger.

The manual gas switching block is a known killer from way back
because it has the potential to deliver a lethal hot mix to the
diver. That is why no-one in their right mind would design one
into any technical diving equipment. The rebreather guys use
a physically separated tail to connect their deco gas to the
loop instead of a gas switching block.

From the moment Maffatone built that rig, he was a dead man
walking.

Now you may not understand the well-known principles of putting
together a safe technical diving rig, Jerred, so for now, we
won't go there.

But here's something you don't need any expertise to understand.

Just before he died, Mafatone was held up to the media as an
example of the technical diver in action. None of his 'friends'
said to the media "Nah, he's not typical of technical diving.
He's an idiot. His rig's dangerous. That's not what we do."
None of them said "Tony, you idiot, you've set your rig up to
kill yourself." Or "Tony, for your own good, you're not getting
on my boat with that deathtrap rig." Or, "Fuck you crazyman, I'm
not gettting on a boat with you while you're diving that piece
of shit."

So Tony appears in the press as another of us wierd fucked-up
death-wish technical divers. Then, in front of the media, the
general public, legislators, insurance companies, and our relatives,
the inevitable happens. He kills himself.

Now, you go tell your insurance company you're a technical diver
and you like diving deep in the ocean using mixed gasses. Then
thank idiots like Maffatone for the response you get.
