If you don't use a blowtorch on top, it really helps to cover the pan - just a bit of sheet metal/aluminum flashing will do. You need to melt a bit more lead than you are pouring in the mold, since some crud and slag is inevitable and this floats on top, then pours out only if you try to use every bit of lead in the pan.
