Subject: Tech 2000 conference in Nanaimo
Never wearing negatively buoyant back tanks, discussing weighting when
wearing steel vs. aluminum stages, wing inflation from the left post to
"avoid the confusion created when crossing hoses behind the head",
switching the additional buckle (the one that holds the light, ie. your
ditchable weight, in place) inside out so that the lever is against the
body to "avoid accidentally opening it or confusing it with the harness
buckle", using double wings when not wearing a drysuit... These are a
few of the points that immediately come to mind.

There was also a rebreather Q&A forum, that seemed to be much too
docile, so I questioned the panel as to how they could justify the
additional inherent complexity of a fully closed system over a passive
semi-closed, given that the SCR provides most of the benefits, and that
the CCR divers were not taking these units to the limits of their gas
endurance anyway. The response was somewhat long winded, but boils
down to the fact that the CCR is lighter (assuming insufficient OC
bailout) on Tom's bad back, and that it doesn't scare the fish. Some
people have different priorities, I guess.

Highlights include an excellent presentation by Dr. David Sawatzki on
Vancouver Island cave exploration, and Jarrod's talk on Wakulla. Also,
thanks to Jarrod, Andrew and all other participants in the DIR dives on
Monday.
