You raise some interesting points here.  You seem to agree that a computer
doesn't teach you anything or is particularly useful, but then talk about
the freedom of altering the plan.  If you understand decompression, then you
can adjust your profile on the fly as necessary.  Buy some decent software,
learn about decompression and buy a bottom timer.  It will cost you far less
than the near £1,000 that a VR3 costs and you will get a far superior
decompression on your dives.
