It is my understanding that a Whale's lungs completely collapse at depth, with absorption of all the lung gasses into the bloodstream. And, on ascent, the gasses come back out. This would at least lead one to the conclusion that their systems are much better suited for the transfer of gasses than, for example, ours. So, they just do it better. We can always hope that we might one day evolve to their level of grace and sensitivity.
