May 11, 2000 "On May 11, 2000, a team of divers from the Submerged Cultural Resources Exploration Team (SCRET) successfully completed an exploration dive on the SS Admiral Sampson. SCRET is a Washington nonprofit corporation that promotes the exploration and documentation of submerged cultural resources in the Pacific Northwest (see www.scret.org) The SS Admiral Sampson was a passenger liner, 296 feet long by 36 feet wide. Her hull was steel and she had a wooden topside and single stack. The steamer now lays in 320 feet of water, off of Point No Point in Admiralty Inlet. On August 26, 1914, the Admiral Sampson departed Seattle for Alaska with a full load of passengers and crew. While passing Point No Point, she was rammed on the port side by the Princess Victoria and sank quickly stern first. The wreck now sits upright on the bottom, with the wooden structure collapsed onto the steel hull. This was an incredible dive as the wreck is covered with an amazing amount of life. The bottom currents were strong and visibility was 10 - 15 feet. The divers spent 20 minutes on the wreck at an average depth of 310 feet, followed by 100 minutes of decompression. The dive went flawlessly and the team returned with some great video footage. Further exploration is planned. According to the owners of the wreck, Argonaut Resources, Inc. (Kent Barnard and Gary Severson), this is the first time scuba divers have visited the Admiral Sampson. Argonaut Resources located the wreck in the early 90s and used a small submersible, ROVs and a Newt suit to recover artifacts and video the wreck. The SCRET team consisted of : Mixed Gas Divers: Kevin Connell Andrew Georgitsis (Video) Walter Jaccard Brock Wheaton Support Divers: Mark Tourtellot Miranda Alldritt Boat Captains Jay Jordan Arron Garcia Surface Video Gary Severson Surface Support Kent Barnard Sonya Tittle This was an excellent dive.
