DIR is a sound >philosophy, as long as it evolves for environments. A couple of things I've observed consistently: On these lists, strokes can muster no better argument against DIR than to accuse adoptees of the DIR approach of 'blind' obedience. Off the lists it has been my experience that adoptees of DIR tend to be brighter, more questioning, more active in the search for knowledge about diving, while the anti-DIR brigade tend to be stuck in the past; are happy to work (blindly) from a more limited knowledge base; Have a less questioning attiude to diving; and tend to cling tenaciously to what their instructors told them in the face of better information and genuine knowledge from people doing real dives. It is a habit of intellectually dishonest people to accuse others of what they suspect and most fear in themselves. Thus I am not surprised that the anti-DIR brigade should ignore all evidence to the contrary and accuse us of 'blind obedience'. One other thing. Those of us who have adopted DIR are a minority. And few of us have not been in a position where we have had to explain, demonstrate, justify and in some cases defend the DIR system against a boat-load of non-thinking divers blindly following the whims of strokery. The fact that most of us can explain and demonstrate our system while NONE of the strokes can, clearly indicates who is blind and who is not. In Sydney, thanks to the efforts of Dave Hempenstall - a young, active Sydney DIR diver, we have enjoyed two 'No-Strokes Allowed' DIR-only wreck dives in the past couple of weeks. Six of us on the first trip, eight on the second. With a further three trips planned over the next month. What is interesting is that on both occasions, the skippers of the boats involved have commented on the smoothness of the dives, the teamwork, the precision, the clean, simple and reliable set-up of the gear, and the lack of pissing around that they usually have to put up with from the strokes. This is the shape of the future. Our 'No Strokes Allowed' dives will continue. And the charter boat skippers will come to favour us DIR divers over strokes because we are thirsty for knowledge and we think about what we are doing and try to do it well, and the strokes will continue to do it blind, and wonder why they fuck up. rgds billyw >----- Original Message ----- >From: Jim Cobb <cobber@ci*.co*> >To: Tech Diver <techdiver@aquanaut.com> >Sent: Saturday, May 27, 2000 7:41 PM >Subject: Black is smarter than Bill Hamilton > > > > Well, perusing the latest copy of DAN's Alert Diver magazine there is an > > article, an interview, of Dr. Bill Hamilton, the worlds authority on > > technical and industrial deco/saturation diving, not to mention the NASA > > space program.
