It's an entertaining article. Don't expect to learn a lot about Trimix diving. The article is very cool, but it is written to a general audience, so it's not so good for education. It will tell you a lot about Sheck's psych, motivations, etc. It was written by Ned Deloach, the same guy that wrote the guidebook to Florida springs. He was more of a travelling companion/support diver for Sheck on the Mante dives than a dive partner. I don't know Paul Deloach, but I've heard his name before and it is NOT the same guy. Mexico Desconocido published an article at about the same time about the 1988 Mante dive. It was written by (I believe) Sergio Zambrano. It's in Spanish, but has some cool photos (I can read the captions on the photos, but not the text -- I only speak "taco espanol"). I was on the 1989 Mante trip where Sheck made 870 feet. It was a very cool trip. Those were the days! Most of us were learning trimix diving on our own, didn't know what we were doing, so we did lots of stroke and weanie dives. My partner and I did a weanie stroke deal where we descended on air, switched to some leftover trimix that Sheck gave us, dropped to about 270, came back using air and o2 for deco. The tables were generated semi-manually by me with an HP calculator. The trip itself was a blast. We got to deal with the Mexican army (nothing like having camafloge wearing, assault rifle toten dudes telling you in Spanish to "get out of the truck and open the back" -- or was that "stay in the truck and keep your hands on the wheel"?). We got to buy sodas for the cops in some of the small towns, which kept us from getting speeding tickets. We rescued a bat. And we got to watch some workers set explosives and blow up some rocks. Anyway, I have the Ocean Realm article. I'll try to dig it up and put it on my website. Sincerely, C. Reading that is a waste of time. Read Timothy Leary on LSD or a listen ot a Cheech and Chong record. tgunther@co*.co* wrote: > > Team: > > On page 323 of Burgess' "The Cave Divers," the author mentions Sheck Exley's > dive partner Ned DeLoach writing an article entitled, "The Deepest Dive: A > Study in Controlled Paranoia."
