I just received the latest blurb from Oceanic about their new rebreather. They advertised, here in the UK anyway, that it was on the way, and one day 'acquaintance' courses were available. So I rang up and asked for details. They said that the people who dealt with the Phibean were over in the States (this was at the time DEMA was on), but that courses would start when they got back. They said they'd send details of how to book onto the courses. The literature turned up today. A one page blurb advertising the Phibean. Two versions, the CCS50 (Nitrox, 2 cylinder configuration, max. depth 50m) and the CCS100 (Mixed gas, four cylinder configuration, max. depth 100m). The interesting statement came with it that it can use ' a variety of diluent mixes, such as Nitrox, Heliox and Neox'. Neox? A bit pricey I would have thought - doesn't it have a severe deco penalty? Anyway, they claim that due to the high level of response, there will be a delay in setting up the one day courses. These should start in March. Instructor training will start around May, with 'initial units' being shipped to customers by September 1995. The cost will be in the region of 4000 UK pounds. Initially, all training will be through a new organisation, International Training and Technology (IT&T), a corporate entity owned by Oceanic. Ed Betts is developing the training materials. If anyone wants a bit more info, feel free to ask. Out of interest, has any actually seen a working version of the Phibean? iain robertson robertsoni@ol*.ag*.bt*.co*.uk*
