In the UK we have conditions similar to this. I have also dived using
my rig from RHIBs. I have had no problem with the fact the I do not have
a break in the shoulder strap.  This includes removing the kit in the water
for boats with no ladder.

Never seen one, I have the DR classic, which I bought before the Halcyons
came out.
If I was to replace it, I'd go Halcyon. Among other things, the outer bag is
thicker.

Not sure about this, I'm not on rec.scuba, my DR inflator leaks (slightly)
when I inflate I am awaiting the replacement as we type. The onflator in
question
was a 'generic' type SF1000, I think.
