Karl- I'm copying my reply to techdiver with a new subject in hopes that it will remain in the archives. My idea is that instead of answering this same question 9 or 10 times a year, I can simply refer people to the archives. I hope my experiences will be enough to scare someone else away from certain pieces of equipment. Save some lives.... save some new divers some money.... very noble cause if I don't say so myself! I've watched 2 tank units implode at 190 and 240 fsw. I've seen 3 wrist units flood the battery compartment on reef dives in no more than 30 fsw. I've HAD 1 wrist unit flood the battery compartment on a reef dive in no more than 30 fsw. I've had a tank unit quit transmitting with fresh batteries after 3 minutes at 65 fsw. I've seen 7 units (3 Nemesis series, and 4 Commander series) give screwed up deco info (i.e.: 20 minutes at 200 feet call for first stop at 190 for 1 minute...once 190 for 1 is completed, it adds MORE deco time with each stop completed!?!?) I've had 2 units (1 Nemesis II EANx and 1 Nemesis IIa EANx) do the same as above (faulty deco) to me personally. I've had countless encounters with Nemesis units that did not take programming even after verification.... thus leading to faulty deco information... wrong gases, trigger depths, etc... Let's not even mention the times (at least 10) in which I've had Commander and Nemesis units simply go dead (blank)...even with fresh batteries. Oh, and don't forget Cochran Tech Support's answer to the problem of fresh batteries not working.... "You've gotta take a razor blade and scrape the battery tester off the side of Energizer or Duracell batteries...." What's up with that?!?!?! Every time I've had problems, the units go back to Cochran for service. Granted, I've never had to pay for repairs... at least they take care of it for free. But simply giving me a new tank unit or wrist unit and telling me they don't know what went wrong just isn't good enough. Why should I trust my life to something that the designers can't even figure out? You ask why I call them "useless?" Try using them to dive mix. If I can get a depth gauge and timer (Casio G-Shock watch works great.... and the light works in a pinch.... great for seeing students during blackout drills) for under $100, why would I spend 10 times that on a computer that gets bent when I dive mix? Simple and slow enough? Happy diving! Case Harris diveman@cy*.co* -- Send mail for the `techdiver' mailing list to `techdiver@aquanaut.com'.
