Subject: San Diego Diving recommendations
I am going to a conference in San Diego July 8 - 12 and am planning to
spend two or three days diving in the area afterwards.

Since I have never gone diving in the Pacific before (being a Northeast
wreck-diving geek), I am not necessarily interested in doing any technical
diving (unless I would get to see something really special) -- my primary
goal is just to see the kelp forests, marine life, and whatever else the
area has to offer that's of interest. (Artificial reef wrecks are not
necessarily high on my priority list unless there's something cool to see
there, since I get to do plenty of wreck diving at home.) I figure that by
sticking to "regular" recreational diving, I'll get to spend more time in
the water and see more stuff. I want to do boat diving, not shore diving.
(Not a big fan of shore diving.) Naturally I want to go with a DIR or
DIR-friendly operation.

I need to make hotel reservations ASAP, so the first thing I need to know
is whether I should remain at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina (333 W.
Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101) or if there is a (hopefully cheaper but
not sleazy) hotel or motel closer to the best boats. Any recommendations?

How far in advance do I need to reserve myself a spot on the boat(s)?

Any DIR divers out there who would like to buddy up with a Right Coast DIR
diver for a couple of days?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA!

Maggie Owens;
