DAN SEAP Alert Diver January to March 2000 Edition has an article on using prophylaxis for malaria (page 31). It comments are slightly at odds with what are is conventionally put forward. I can't do the intent of the article justice with paraphrases but I suggest you read the article as it basically says it can be done with the proper knowledge, understanding of the risks and determining what is your acceptable risk level. The authors for the article are Dr Corey (Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University) and Dr. DuBios (a DAN on call and Referral Physician). Also there is a section on the use of Lariam and diving by Ernest S. Campbell M.D. For the record I use Doxycycline when travelling in SE Asia and diving Matthew MacLean Mackay QLD ----- Original Message ----- From: ANDREW MCALPINE <andrew_mcalpine@ba*.ne*> To: <techdiver@aquanaut.com> Cc: <margareta_prozesky@ba*.ne*> Sent: Tuesday, April 11, 2000 3:10 PM Subject: Contra-Indications to Diving > List, > A diving Buddy is off to Papua New Guinea in June for a diving > break, (Long awaited) and the World Health Org only recommend > Lariam/mefloquine as a malaria prophylactic.
