Al, That is an easy one. None. I have virtually no swimming experience whatsoever. The most swimming I ever did was when I was a kid in backyard swim and when I had to swim a 440 for my NAUI ITC. When I did a PADI Crossover 10 years later, luckily they only asked me to do a 800 yard snorkel. (I actually grabbed a pair of 5-6 full foot fins by accident, I have size 10 feet, on that one. My feet felt like they were going to fall off after 100 yards. If I would have quit I would still be getting a hard time about it so I sucked it up and did it) I started by going to the gym and getting a little bit of an aerobic base. I was able to adapt to Masters swim pretty quickly becuase I taught diving for 12 years so I am really comfortable in the water. I used to swim at a Y but swimming laps endlessly got old real quick and I quit. The Masters will challenge you by mixing up the workouts, having them coached, and also by seeing 80 year old me kicking your butt in the lane next to you. You tend to put a little more effort into it when you see it. I have been going for a month now. I swim like crap, my butt hangs out of my speedo, my swim times suck, and it gets harder each time because I am doing this correctly. But I am getting faster, my stroke is getting more quality to it, and I have lost seven pounds and I am looking better. Plus I have more energy and time in my day. Plus being in the water on a daily basis, added with the excersize will make you a much better all around diver. There is some definent parallels betweent the two sports. Plus you will start looking and feeling better. Based on my experience this is what I would reccomend to you. Find a masters program in your area. Call a local tri shop or running shop and ask them where a good one is. The one I go to has two sessions per day 6 days a week. Start going 2 - 3 times a week to start. After a month start adding more days as you feel needed. If you haven't swam before you will be totally confused by all the terminology 8X100 IM, 4X250 BLD etc. Just ask the coach and he will explain it to you. Or you can buy a book that explains it. People are friendly if they see you there more than once and will answer all your questions. You will suck at first. But you will get better. There are many mornings when I haven't wanted to get up at 4am but it sets up your whole day and it is worth it. The tough part is getting past the initial part. Then it is easier. I don't wear a swim cap. I don't have long hair Hope it helps. TB --- Al Marvelli <ajmarve@ba*.ne*> wrote: > Todd, > > Ive been swimming at night at the local facility > that has masters.
