Subject: Deco Reg (OMS BAD)

Be afraid be very very afraid of the OMS DECO O2 reg.
I was dumb enough to buy a few (at the same time). The 1st. stage is
okay but the 2nd stage is a piece of crap.
On or about the 2nd time they popped apart during the dive they became
argon dry suit regs. and fill up the beach toy regs....

I just turned on the gas stuck it in my mouth cleared and had a total
reg separation. I watched the front bezel, diaphragm and O ring sink into
the gloom.
Turns out, the large plastic locking ring clamp only needs a quarter
of a inch turn to unlock and fuck up a good deco. Even a small
hit or scrape will unlock it. After that i dug out the old trusty Scuba
Pro metal 2nd stages. I will replace them this season with Apex or
Scuba Pro regs. I prefer the suicide lever to detune the reg until i want
to use it.

I was very glad that i had replaced all my valves to DIN that very week
I was able to switch deco regs easy. I know it sounds like common sense
now but sometimes its takes a situations like this to trigger an entire
re-evaluation of your gear. There is no place for cheap or poorly designed
gear in this kind of diving.

PS, Some OMS gear is build well. I happen to be a fan of my OMS dual
bladder wing with several mods. I have replaced the standard bungees with
a special light weight break away rubber tubing, shortened the hoses
etc. I dive both wet and dry sometimes in the same week so i prefer the
back up bladder. I understand the concern about the bungees but i cannot
see any reason not to dive big open water with out the back up of a 2nd
bladder. I once seen a post with reference to diving with single bladder
to be considered DIR. And the backup was to dive with lighter tanks or
inflate your Wet suit for backup. Just dive dual and move on.

I am wide open to constructive comments after all they are the only
ones worth posting.

        I have
seen a variety of regs, 1st and 2nd, being used for the O2
bottle. Are there any strong opinions (that's asking for trouble in
this
forum) on recommended make and models. As critical O2 is for deco dives,
I
have seen some rather cheap setups on the O2 when the rest of the gear
is
top of the line. I understand that performance would not be much of
an issue
at 20ft but I would think reliability would be.

Thanks,
