The MK20 is not the best regulator in the world for use in near-freezing water. However, the new composite piston may change that. In any case, if it was a first stage problem your second stage regulator would have been freeflowing. A freeflowing inflator indicates ice in the inflator valve. You probably had water in the valve before you started the dive or you had too much water in your fill. Make sure that your inflator is dry before the dive.
