Subject: Re: Battleships as Artificial...

The suggestion that we recycle battleships as opposed to make them artificial
reefs deserves recognition in the sense that it is important to understand
the limit of our resources, however the theory is flawed in several senses.

1) An artificial reef not only acts as a recreational resource for divers but
replaces critical nursery habitate which has been destroyed by coastal
development. The latesest studies show how these reefs support the first year
class of many species including commercially viable species such as lobster
and sea bass. Our fisheries are crashing and if we are going to support
renewable resources, artificial reefs provide an excellent start.

2) For those of you who have ever been aboard an Iowa class battle ship, much
of theplating isextremely thick seven to nine inches in places. These thick
plates cost more to dismantle in labor and materials. You would have to
examinthe economics of recycling these ships.

Suggestion

Strip these vessels of all the high price metals THere are huge amounts of
brass onboard, and recycle portions of the vessel which would have to be
removed such as the upper superstructure and sink the vessel as a reef.

This should benifit all parties
