This is the upgrading of a discussion on rec.scuba... I am a relative SCUBA newbie, but trying to get the right equipment the second time around (Zeagle Ranger currently for sale on eBay to make space for a Halcyon rig). I want to build my first doubles rig so that when I am experienced enough to benefit from GUE in a few years, I've already been diving the blessed gear for years in open water and am completely comfortable with it. To that end, I have asked which steel tanks are preferred by DIR divers on rec.scuba. I have gotten about equal responses for Faber/OMS and PST, but one person indicated that PST were the WKPP/DIR "blessed" tanks because of their bouyancy characteristics. I wanted clarification on this but nobody on rec.scuba has stepped forward with anything compelling, so I'm hoping that the guys who really do the diving can help me out. OMS 98's are neutral when empty, PST 104's are -2.5lbs when empty. My contention is that a heavier backplate or v-weight will allow a diver to have exactly the same bouyancy, but with better trim, as the weight will be closer to the center of mass if it's in the backplate than if it's in the tanks (shorter inverting moment). Completely theoretical argument as I have only dived the OMS 98's (and did that wet) with no comparison to the PST's. If the argument doesn't hold water, I would love to understand why. Another point is that locally, most/all of the people I would want to dive with (those who have gone to or expressed interest in GUE training) own Faber/OMS tanks. I don't think that the gear similarity part of DIR buddy equipment selection has to extend to the tanks as well, but I could be wrong on that as well... Finally, OMS might not use hot dip galvanizing, which would make their corrosion protection clearly inferior to PST, though I am contacting OMS directly to determine what they actually do for their galvanizing process.
